The Good--The Bad--The OH MY they did what??????
Hi Kris, Please feel free. About the garage door issue . . . I got her from a rescue and kept her in the garage until she was fully housebroken. Day 1 - opened the garage door and set herself free. I couldn't figure out how. Day 2 - again, opened the garage door. The neighbors found her and kept her at their house for me. Day 3 - I left for work, then snuck around the house and watched through the back door. I saw her pawing at the button on the wall (and might I add that she had to be standing on the stairs to reach it). I corrected her, put a babygate at the top of the stairs and went to work. Came home to find an open garage door and Zoie tied to the front deck with my neighbor. Day 4 - I went into the house and found a large plastic measuring cup so I taped it over the button. Came home to find a shredded plastic measuring cup, an open garage door and a missing dog. She'd been picked up by control. Day 5 - Used duct tape (a lot of it) to secure another large firm plastic container over the button. Again, a shredded container, an open garage door, and a dog waiting with the neighbors. *sigh* Day 6 - Disconnected the garage door opener. Spent the next week watching her through the back window as she stood on the top step pawing at the button on the wall. This was my introduction to huskies. . . Might I also add that she has chewed through four harnesses when tied out and backed out of her collar when spotting prey that needed attending to (*ahem*). Let me also say that she was the first dog I ever owned. It's been a steep learning curve for me. I couldn't love her more than I do. . . we've been together eight years. She's my best friend. When I remember those early days with her, I remember wondering if I was an idiot. I might just be, but she's brilliant. No question about it. -H. P.S. If I can get a picture of her with the lever handle door, I'll send it along.
I wish I could tell you that it goes away, but as best I can tell - nope, know. She learned how to open the garage door her first week at home and I finally had to disconnect the button on the wall. She's 8 years old now and I caught her trying to open the garage door at my in-laws house at Christmas last year. She didn't forget how those doors work -- I was rather surprised. She also learned how to escape the 9-foot dog run at the vet's office/boarding kennel. She now has to stay in a run with a concrete ceiling. I love looking at the outside of her chart. "Escape Artist / Water Dumper" She has also learned how to open the gates in the yard -- which are super reinforced nowadays. She can open any lever handled door and won't stop trying even if the door is locked. She goes to work with me on occasion and access. (All the doors there are lever handles, I might add. When frustrated from being locked in, she has tried to dig the carpet. Quick reprimands stop her fast.) These dogs are wickedly smart. Maybe Zoie is just more determined -- but she doesn't forget and she doesn't like to be left behind. My male, Keegan, has managed to open the backyard gate (learned that one from Zoie), but he's more mellow and content to stay near his people and his yard. He's sort of funny though. I think he's sort of like Doug's "stoner" husky. I'll be interested to read other's replies to this. . . and their solutions to the escape issues. -H.
mommies soon so they didn`t get to go. Since I didn`t have my 2 girls I had to change the lineup Usually I use Floyd or Floyd & Mishka in lead. This time I put Jack in lead with Floyd.I thought I would never see home again. Jack is We had the sled out last weekend .Yay!!!! 2 of our girls are going to be very independant and pig headed, also I should have remembered he only answers to Jim and all the dogs do whatever Jack wants. Well once I had em all hooked up & ready to go I thought I had it made as the process was unusually easy that day. Well I yelled Hut hut, that was my first mistake. Jack headed straight for a plowed up cornfield after a short but very bumpy ride I got him turned back to our property where he headed straight for the ponds YAY!!! We went out back without falling in but by then I was pretty tired & frustrated so told Jack to go home, made a swing around the yard at which time he headed for the front kennel, only problem was our propane tank was straight ahead when we reached it he went one way & the rest of the team went the other. Thank God that sled has good brakes or I woulda kissed that tank pretty hard I got that mess undone & headed for the road thinking it would be smooth sailing,right......Jim came out the door to watch, Jack saw him & ran through the ditch taking all of us with him to file a complaint about our little adventure. Well next week Floyd & Mishka will be in lead again so I have a snowballs chance of surviving the ride.I just love winter sports. Eva
This is my experience with a husky. time. It was time for me to go to bed. Then Bella would start whining. That time. It was time for me to go to bed. Then Bella would start whining. That went on for 3 days. I so wanted to pull my hair out because I was working and I wasn't getting any sleep. Eva would call to check up on me. I don't know if it was to see if everyone was still alive or not. But after the 4th day Bella seemed to be getting use to the idea of me and sleeping in a crate. I must admit. My husband is a pit bull lover and that's mainly the type of dogs we had. But after all the sleepless nights. I wouldn't trade her in for anything. anything. think of Bella it's either digging holes in the dirt to get to our next door neighbors yard or when I first got her. Jen H
We had just brought Domino home from the pound. And it was a few days before Christmas. At this time he was already 6 months old. I decided to sit on the floor and wrap presents. Well this is my first time having a Husky, so I knew they were stubborn, but didn't realize how stubborn... he wanted to play and I ignored him because I was tyring to wrap the presents. Next thing I knew he came up from behind me and jumped on my back. He grabbed my pony tail and started shaking my head back and forth like he was playing with one of his toys. lol Thank goodness my hair was long enough I rolled over and was able to get him off. Of course I was furious getting ready to yell at him but then he rolled over on his back waiting for a tummy rub. He was SOOO cute I couldn't help to laugh and give him a rub. He has not done that to me since, but when it comes time for Christmas I make sure I wrap presents on the table. lol
